Description: Published by Brett Printing & Publishing Co., 1918. Also other publications, and loose material laid in, which includes correspondence, drafts, photographs, and clippings, which mostly relate to the Tarawera eruption, the Rotorua Region, and Te Arawa. This volume also included some larger maps which have been housed separately (not yet described). Other publications include 'Narrative of the volcanic eruptions at Tarawera, New Zealand, June 10th, 1886' printed at the 'Evening Bell' Office, 1886. Correspondence includes a letter from H Fildes (25 Dec 1934) which mentions James Edge-Barbington, and the Rotorua guides Sophia and Kate, as well as Eric Ramsden. Also a letter from Charles A Cramer, of Onehunga (10 Jun 1936), inc which he recalls his memories of the Tarawera eruption 'like a movie film'; and a letter from Taiporutu Te Mapu (21 Jun 1938) where he is responding to questions that Cowan had sent him, particularly relating to Hinemoa's burial site and other related matters. Description: Photographs taken during the trial of Rua Kenana in 1916 at the Supreme Court in Auckland. Includes portraits of people associated with Rua and the trial, and most of the photographs were taken outside the Supreme Court. Photographer unidentified, except for a two-part panorama of Maungapohatu Pa, probably taken by Percy R Wilkinson, a surveyor sent in by the police to gather evidence for them A label at the back of the album advertises Walter Suckling (as the publisher?) It is understood that a number of similar photograph albums of the trial were created. Rua Kenana was accused of using seditious language, counselling others to murder or disable the police, and resisting arrest. He received the sentence of one year's hard labour followed by 18 months' imprisonment. Inscriptions: Album page - Frontispiece - To my old friend - - Hare Hongi.
