Description: Wes Reichel was born in Roxburgh in 1948. Describes how his paternal grandfather was German and came to New Zealand in the nineteenth century. Notes that his interest in fruit growing led his grandfather to Millers Flat and that he is still on this land. Mentions that he also leases land from ECNZ. Gives details of other family members. Describes how most of the orchard is in plums and apples which are sold at the gate and also go to the market. Discusses his interest in trout fishing in the Clutha River and hunting rabbit, deer and duck. Describes changes in the river since the Dunstan (Clyde) dam was built. Discusses the role of the Roxburgh dam. Describes the Millers Flat gymkhana and the local community. Notes the main employment is fruit growing and farming. Mentions local identities Jock Tulloch and the Fagan brothers at the store. Describes the flood in 1956 after the Roxburgh dam was built and the 1995 flood. Comments that the use of the Roxburgh dam for emergency storage may have saved Roxburgh. Mentions attending Millers Flat Primary School and Roxburgh High School. Talks about the school bus, some teachers and subjects. Describes casual work, including picking strawberries at Marsh brothers, for a number of years after leaving school. Contends that the Clutha is already spoilt as a result of the Roxburgh dam. Comments on the benefits to Millers Flat of the current proposal. Notes his property will not be flooded. Discusses the split in the community with the majority in favour of the dam and the minority more vocal. Describes the benefits development will bring such as facilities, recreational parks, tourism and improved fishing. Mentions Lake Dunstan. Describes the negative impact of the dam including the loss of good land and the Beaumont community. Comments on information provided by ECNZ, their willingness to listen, uncertainty, the loss of residents and dropping school rolls. Notes that the level of information has reduced since Contact took over. Mentions John Rutherford, Roger Fairclough, Sally Marx and Diane Buchan. Comments on workshops held.
