"It seems our fuel contamination might be worse than we first thought Minister!" 8 Nove...

Date: 2010

From: Evans, Malcolm Paul, 1945- :Digital cartoons

Reference: DCDL-0016041

Description: The captain of the 'HMNZS Otago' tells the minister on his mobile phone that their fuel contamination might be worse than first thought as a diver appears out of the fuel hatch with a fish on a spear. HMNZS Otago has been forced to abandon its first international deployment after more mechanical woes hit the new $85m offshore patrol vessel. It left Devonport naval base in Auckland for a tour of the Pacific last month, but turned back the next day after it was discovered it had salt water in its fuel tanks. This meant the cancellation of its first deployment outside New Zealand. Otago's delivery this year was delayed by engine problems, then gearbox problems on its maiden voyage to Dunedin. Both colour and black and white versions of this cartoon are available Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).

News - Navy engineers have ruled out deliberate fuel contamination for causing their ne...

Date: 2010

From: Smith, Ashley W, 1948- :[Digital cartoons published in the Shipping Gazette, MG Business, or Presto]

Reference: DCDL-0016362

Description: The cook is seized by a Navy Engineer as the 'HMNZS Otago' who is sitting at the dinner table becomes very ill. Another officer checks a cooking pot and says 'the food's clear'. Context; HMNZS Otago had to turn back just 12 hours into its three-week mission to the Pacific Islands because of fuel contamination. A 24-hour sea trial has been conducted to put the ship under the stresses that are experienced at sea to eliminate a hull breach as the cause of fuel contamination. The trials included manoeuvring of the ship, high speed trials, and use of primary and secondary systems onboard. No ingress of water into fuel tanks has been detected throughout these trials. "The trial has identified that neither OTAGO's systems nor hull are likely to have been the source of the salt water in the fuel," said Lieutenant Commander Simon Rooke, Commanding Officer of OTAGO. "This is a great outcome as we can now refuel and be available for operational tasking again." The focus of the investigation is now on the fuel supplied to OTAGO as a possible source of the contamination. (Scoop 12 November 2010) Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
