Description: Galina and Wassili Wassiliewa lived at 16 St John Street on the northern side of the Aro Valley and connecting with the very end of the Terrace. Over many years photographs were taken of the living and dining rooms. These often included guests, though more often they are just interior shots or photographs of Galina and her dogs. Galina seems to have kept dogs most of the time she lived in New Zealand, her last being a huge white Pyrenean mountain dog called Tata, and an English labrador called Fedia. She also kept cats. Turreted room at ground level (perhaps a conservatory) on the left. Retaining wall between the house and lawn at a lower level. Flower beds around the drive and some set into the lawn. Description: Lantern slides relating to propagation of fruit trees, 1930s-1950s. Photographer(s) are unidentified, but most images appear to be copies of illustrations and texts from an unidentified gardening publication. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the subject. Includes examples of grafts, pruning, and training methods on apple trees (and one for a black currant bush). Also shows "extensive cropping" in Tasmania. Three further images show hyacinth seeds shooting, bulbs "crosscut and scooped", and pots for cuttings from rhododendrons. Arrangement: Set contains slides from box 9 with paper divider marking set reading "Fruit pruning + crafting of fruit". Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location and/or the subject. Slides include: - Views of various gardens, flower beds, and trees. Also houses in the context of their gardens as well as surrounding farmland. Featured flowers and trees include magnolias, rhododendrons (with at least six images showing the same garden), clematis, weeping willow, stock, aquatic plants (lilies), acacia tree, and roses. Also includes structures associated with gardens such as ponds, rivers, fountains, statuary, a sundial, pathways, an arbour, and stone walls. - Series of images most likely taken at the Fleming & Co flour mill in Riccarton, Christchurch. Description: Panoramic view taken just inside the main entrance to the Wellington Botanical Gardens in Glenmore Street. Description: Studies of trees, and spring scenes (taken in spring 1984) taken by Rhoda McWhannell, chiefly at the Rozel farm and nursery. The first 11 images are tree studies including fern fronds, the underside of a silver fern, the trunk of a eucalyptus maculosa, a black ponga (mamuku), New Zealand native clematis paniculata, and a twisted maple trunk. The last 10 images were taken in Spring 1984, and include a nandina hedge, kowhai blooms, a red camellia flower, dogwood flowers, a spring landscape, and a rhododendron flower.
