Description: The papers relate to Luxford's career as an actress, 1920s-1930s, and later as a print and radio journalist, 1930s-1950s, as well as material on the ANZAC Club, the ANZAC Memorial Garden in New York, ANZAC Hour broadcasts, ANZAC Day commemorations and the British American Ambulance Corps, all of which she was involved with during WWII. Further material relates to Luxford's work with the fashion shows at Hotel Pierre, New York in the 1950s. There are also papers on her work with volunteer and charitable organisations from the 1940s, including certificates awarded to her. In 1996 Luxford's diaries and note books, and a collection of letters from the author Zane Grey, were added to the collection. In 1998, further diaries, newspaper cuttings and correspondence relating mainly to Nola's private and domestic life were donated by Ms Carole van Grondelle, who was using them as source material for her biography. Description: Barbara Isabel Louise Basham born Eltham, third child with two brothers. Outlines family background - father, Frederick Basham, pioneered the first tarsealed roads in New Zealand. Mother worked for Radio as Aunt Daisy. Recalls Depression (1930s), leaving school and getting job in radio through her mother until the outbreak of World War II when she joined Red Cross and applied to go overseas. Describes Red Cross training and explains system of medicals and exams for call-up and getting on the `Oranje'. Describes journey to Egypt, going through Canal to Avonmouth, England. Explains Officer privilege of VADs on board. Mentions butterflies at Mombasa.
