"Life expectancy in New Zealand is growing slower than other places... and it's going t...

Date: 2010

From: Evans, Malcolm Paul, 1945- :Digital cartoons

Reference: DCDL-0015712

Description: The upper frame shows a New Zealand bungalow from which float the words 'Life expectancy in New Zealand is growing slower than other places' and in the lower cartoon children create chaos inside a house during the school holidays and their mother threatens them with a rolling pin, yelling that life expectancy will shrink more if they don't get outside. 'Figures issued by the New Zealand Institute show life expectancy gained relatively from 1990-2000 but then began slipping. While actual life expectancy is still increasing, it has been rising faster in all other developed countries in the OECD, except two, within the past two years. In the past two years, New Zealand's ranking has dropped from 11th to 14th'. Professor Mason Durie, of Massey University, says it is important to keep the new figures in perspective as they do not reflect the progress that has been made. He says life expectancy among Maori males has increased from about 56 in 1950 to 70 years today, which is a substantial improvement. (Radio NZ News 30 September 2010) Quantity: 2 digital cartoon(s).

Refers to the news that New Zealand has moved from first to fifth place in international health rankings of seven countries, carried out by the Commonwealth Fund. New Zealand was ranked third best place to die when forty countries were looked at in a new index, compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). Each nation was ranked according to its performance in four categories, including the availability, cost and quality of end-of-life care services.
