Winston Peter's accepts Tuku Morgan's apology and assumes the moral high ground. International study shows kiwi kids poor at maths but good at bullying. There are also land deeds and papers of W Howard Hill and William Colenso. Notebooks, correspondence, and papers on the history, geology, and geography of the Napier-Taupo-Kaingaroa region, notes on moa, Captain St George's diary, Shakespearean controversy, and other topics. Papers include notes and papers on geology, history of the Kaingaroa-Taupo area, Te Kooti campaign, and early history of New Zealand; correspondence from W Colenso to Mrs E Hill. Also journal for 1897 which deals largely with school inspecting in Hawke's Bay. Henry Thomas Hill was the Inspector for Schools for Hawke's Bay and the East Coast. Description: Interview with Robyn Heaton, born in Levin, June 1942. Talks about growing up in Levin as an only child and enjoying her time at Horowhenua College. Comments on her extended family in the Horowhenau and her mother's parents in Wellington who had a strong influence on her. Refers to her mother having attended university and been a teacher. Mentions studying zoology and botany at university with a teaching studentship, then teaching chemistry, biology and maths at Palmerston North Girls High School without any training. Refers to the head of science Noelene Tomlinson being her mentor, and to the lack of support for science teachers then. Comments on being head of chemistry at Tawa College, a co-educational school and on girls having more opportunities in science and technology at single sex schools. Mentions changes in the chemistry syllabus during her career. Talks about applying for the position of Head of Science at Wellington Girls College because she wanted to work there. Discusses the school in the late 1970s - the uniforms, discipline, and the poor facilities and support for staff. Describes her role - teaching, and managing the curriculum, resources and staff. Discusses becoming Senior Mistress in the mid 1980s and Deputy Principal in the mid 1990s, still teaching senior chemistry when Senior Mistress but also involved with senior students and their leadership roles, as well as with other management areas. Recalls working under principals Elaine Barnett, Kath Kelly (acting principal for nearly two years) and Marg McLeod. Comments on the disadvantage of having a very small inner sity site with an active building programme. Mentions the impact of changes in Thorndon on the school. Refers to curriculum changes such as home economics (cooking, sewing) and typing being phased out because of a lack of demand, and computer studies, keyboard skills, and tourism introduced. Refers to the introduction of Tomorrow's Schools and NCEA, the loss of independent members of the Board and of the inspectorate, and stresses on staff from an increased administrative load. Mentions changes to school zoning that altered the demographic of the school. Talks about travelling with the school choir to Argentina and to Canada. Description: The records comprise the three sets of registers for the Infants, Boys, and Girls schools. The Boys' and Girls' registers run from 1881 to 1926, while the Infants' registers cover 1882-1935. The `Main' registers run from 1926- 1978. The Boys' registers between 1905-1915 are missing. There are also daily attendance books from 1940s-1950s, a minute book of the Parent Teacher Association, and various papers relating to school administration 1960-1970s. Boys and Girls admission registers from 1878 to 1881 are held at the Beaglehole Room, Victoria University Library, as are log books, correspondence records and other administrative papers; an inventory is available Source of title - Supplied title Relationship complexity - Another 30 volumes of records for the school, including minute books, registers and log books, covering 1874-1936 are held by the Beaglehole Room, Victoria University of Wellington Library (Ref: MSS S372 M9). Three pupil registers are included - Boys School 1877-1878, 1879-1880, and Girls School 1875 to Jan 1882. The School Committee donated the earlier registers and the bulk of the administration records to the Victoria University Library in 1978. Mount Cook School is situated on Buckle and Tory Streets in Wellington. It opened in 1875 with an Infant School, a Boys' School and a Girls' School, each with their own buildings. In 1926, the `brick school' was opened and the Boys' and the Girls' schools were united into one `main school', with the Infant School following in 1935.
