Description: Two photographs of Duntroon Railway Station with Campbell Street next to it; men working on the railway near Duntroon railway bridge; the railway bridge at Duntroon; the bridge over the Mangaroa River with some old track next to it; looking down the platform at Palmerston North Railway Station with goods trains in the yards, a passenger express train at the platform, the Railway Hotel on the right and in the distance the businesses of Barraud & Abraham and A Loufresne, builder; Middlemarch Station with the Railway Hotel and a Billiard and Sample Rooms on the right; Fairlie Station with a coal train on the left; and steam locomotives including the Rotorua express at Morrinsville station. Photographer was Muir & Moodie. Two have a stamp, or part, in German on the reverse. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1880s by various photographers including James Bragge and Josiah Martin. Photographs of the Manawatu Gorge were taken by James Bragge, some of which show the horse and carriage in which Bragge carried his equipment. There is one photograph of English explorer and adventurer Captain Speedy who spent many years in Abyssinia and other parts of Africa, and who came to New Zealand in 1864, where he fought with the Waikato Militia before returning overseas. He is shown wearing Abyssinian costume (p 15).
