Description: John outlines family background which includes names of Drakley and Shaw who settled in Kaiapoi near Christchurch. Father became Head of Dunedin Teachers' College which was in Union Street. Describes his years at Otago Medical School and mentions Professor Billy Benem FRS as one of his most notable teachers. A year after graduating as a doctor John joined the New Zealand Army (1940) and was posted to Trentham before going overseas with the 4th Field Ambulance to Greece. Refers to convalescent depot in Ishmalere on the Suez Canal near the Bitter Islands and Maadi Camp. Later he was attached to the 2nd New Zealand Divisional Cavalry Unit in the desert. Talks about the desert sores which were so difficult to get rid of. Talks of the confusion of the war and his inability to make some sense of it at the time. After the war (1946), with some encouragement from Colonel Kendrick Christy, John settled in Wanganui and had a medical practice. Describes the profound changes during the past 50 years and details his outstanding medical memories and the increased role of nurses. In 1986 John retired and became a member of the Wanganui City Council. Describes his association with the Kaumatua Kaunihera with reference to Horo Hipango. John had a keen interest in conservation and considers himself lucky to have had a few articles and poems published in the magazine `New Zealand Outdoors' (copies of these as well as articles written for the Wanganui Chronicle are included with abstract). Source of title - Supplied title Sir Bernard Dawson, an Englishman by birth, arrived in New Zealand from Australia in 1931 where he took the newly created chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Otago Medical School the following year. Description: Andrew Buchanan (1806-1877) was born in Jamaica and educated at Sherborne and at Paris University where he graduated in medicine and surgery. He attended St Andrews University and graduated with M.D. In 1857 he brought his family to New Zealand. In 1958 gave evidence before a Parliamentary Committee on lunatic asylums. He moved to Dunedin where he took up the Patearoa run of 75,000 acres, extending from the Lammerlaws to Sowburn point. In 1862 he was called to the Legislative Council in which body he did good service in various measures of social reform. He was particulary responsible for the Committee which was set up in 1871 to consider the establishment of a central asylum for persons of unsound mind. In 1874 he retired from the Council and returned to live in England where he died. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s).

They ask for instructions about where they should wait as a group of hooded men, one carrying a smoking gun, grab boxes of goods and make off. A man who has been attacked and who is now lying on the ground can be seen at the left edge of the cartoon. Refers to a recent attack on an Auckland liquor store. The owner, Navtej Singh, was shot and died of his wounds soon after. There was criticism that because the police did not clear the scene for medics for some time Navtej Singh may have died unnecessarily. Published in the Sunday News Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
