Some of the images are related to railways, including railway tunnels (e.g. The Caversham Tunnel when under construction circa 1909), and the Hunts Road Tunnel; the Clutha Railway Bridge; the Wingatui Signal Box; the Balclutha Railway Station, railway yards, and sales-yards; railway barns; D-class engine (New Zealand Railways steam-engine No. 355); the Owaka Express; and bush tramway tracks, one sawmill typical of small mills in the Catlins area. Many of the images are taken with an emphasis on atmosphere, including sunsets, stormy days on the coast near Dunedin, evening at Ocean Beach, storm clouds at Lawyer's Head, and "By beach and sand-hill". Description: Lewis Langford was born 23 October 1909 at Bainham. Describes his family background and childhood in Bainham in a poor but religious family. Talks about milking at home from the age of seven and for the neighbours from the age of eight. After leaving school he worked for his older brother on the Bainham farm and also took Council road contracts. Describes buying his own farm at the age of nineteen. Discusses farming in depth, particularly clearing land, digging ditches, working with a horse team, blacksmithing and droving cattle. Describes taking gold miners and others, including the botanist Walter Brockie, into the Gouland Downs on pack horses. Recalls early Bainham settlers, the use of a water wheel to generate electricity, the arrival of electricity in Bainham in the 1940s, the North west Nelson earthquake of 1929, the Bainham timber mill and local cheese and dairy factories. Describes the impact of the 1935 Labour government. Describes his use of horses in the farm, rather than a tractor, until 1954. Talks about the lack of contemporary community involvement. Kathleen Langford was born in Nelson on 29 December 1907. Describes her family, background, early years in Nelson and her education, especially at Nelson Girls College. Talks about her father's family, the Toll family, and their early years on the Aorere goldfield. Recalls the death of her father, her mother's widowhood and determination that her children not go into domestic service. Talks about her grandmother's involvement with the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and the family's involvement with the Church of Christ. Describes a holiday to Paturau in some depth, her relationship with her mother and working as an office girl. Recalls meeting Lewis Langford and a fairly lengthy courtship during the Depression years. Describe herself as a `townie' and recalls finding it difficult moving to Bainham from Nelson. Describes childbirth during the 1930s including the failure of the phone when required. Talks about haymaking and other work on the farm in addition to domestic work. Mentions domestic help and other help she received with the children. Describes her mother living with them. Description: Lantern slides of vegetable gardening, circa 1930s. Photographer(s) are unidentified, with many images being copies of bookplates from an unidentified gardening publication. Includes hand-drawn illustrations of vegetables with text. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the subject. Most slides contain multiple images (up to four per slide) showing gardening activities and techniques. These include planting, digging, sowing, intercropping, forcing, successional crops, gardeners at work, harvesting, storage, raking, mulching, continuous cloche systems, and plot planning. Featured vegetables and plants are: beets (including storage), broad beans, cabbages, celeriac, celery, leeks, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, marrows, cauliflower, kale, onion leek, rocambole [garlic?], squashes, gourds, pumpkins, and Welsh onion. Some vegetables are shown in the garden, while others appear to be photographed in a studio. Also contains original hand-drawn black and white illustrations of a pepper tree with the text "Peppers are attractive", and further illustrations of a crookneck squash, staking tomatoes, celeriac, okra, and a salsify oyster plant.
