Tungia, -1845?

The Wild Fellow, -1845?

Tungia was a son of Pikauterangi, paramount chief of the Ngati Toa tribe, and an uncle to (and contemporary of) Te Peehi Kupe, Te Rangihiroa, Te Rangihaeata, Te Rauparaha and other senior chiefs. He was one of the principal chiefs during and after the heke from Kawhia. He married his cousin Te Rangimakiri, also of Ngati Toa, to whom he had three children viz Te Pirihana Ngahuka Tungia, Oriwia Te Oka (Te Aka) and Amiria Te Ruatahora. Tungia participated in the whaling trade, and he may have visited Sydney. He lived at Kapiti Island (Waiorua) for many years before relocating to the mainland where he built and occupied the fortified Pa at Pukerua, north of Plimmerton. He also lived on Tokamapuna Island, an off-shore island of Kapiti where his daughter Amiria continued to live with the whaler Tommy Evans.
