Description: Frank Parkin was born in Wellington in 1918. Gives details of the family's emigration to New Zealand about 1912. Describes visiting his maternal grandparents in Yorkshire with his mother. Recalls moving to Evans Bay Parade, to a house built by his father about 1922. Recalls family-oriented entertainment, particulary round the piano. Notes that his father, a builder, was President of the New Zealand Builders Federation. Describes a happy childhood including education at Kilbirnie Primary School and Rongotai College. Mentions a favourite teacher, James Tier. Recalls beginning work as a law clerk at Macalister Mazengarb. Notes the importance of getting into a secure profession as the result of the Depression. Describes an authoritarian work system where the men addressed one another by surname. Comments in detail on the partners O.C. Mazengarb, E.P. Hay and R.L. Macalister. Describes Mazengarb as a very powerful advocate, Hay (who became Judge of the Supreme Court at Lower Hutt) as in demand for his legal opinions and R.L. Macalister as a businessman and local body politician. Recalls the hard work of Leo Coley who was the only man left in the office during the war and who died shortly after. Mentions A.J. (Alf) Mazengarb and L.G. (Leslie) Rose. Describes how his law studies were interrupted by World War II when he served with the Artillery Division in the Pacific. Notes that he and Les Rose became partners in Macalister Mazengarb in 1947. Comments on staff shortages after World War II and how stressful work was. Description: Margaret Hall (nee Julius) was born in Dunedin in 1908. Notes that her family moved to Palmerston North and talks about being educated at Queen Margaret College. Describes how she would have liked to have taken up music but did shorthand typing instead. Recalls attending Miss Glyde's School of Typing and starting work for law firm Salek, Turner and Brown. Discusses the fact that it was easy to get jobs in the 1920s. Recalls beginning work for Macalister Mazengarb in 1929. Describes the partners O.C. Mazengarb, E.P.Hay and R.L. Macalister and other staff. Recalls their personal qualities and areas of work expertise. Notes that E.P. Hay was Mayor of Lower Hutt and R.L. (Robert) Macalister was Mayor of Wellington. Explains the office hierarchy and the difference between secretaries and typists. Recalls the importance of Grace Ewing who did court preparation work. Comments that working women in the 1920s were all single. Discusses the effect on the firm of the Depression. Describes the ledger system, cash book, day book and office routine.
