Description: A Mr Peter Cooper was sent to Malaya during 1955-1957 as an official photographer, he may have taken the photographs in this album. Album consists of snapshots and passport-style photographs (6 x 6 cm) showing members of the New Zealand Special Air Service in Malaya between 1955 and 1957. Most captions handprinted in the album. Many personnel names are listed above, but there are over 100 more individual passport-style photographs in the album which have not been listed. Subjects covered include Eban (Iban) trackers from Borneo; life in the jungle including camping with hammock and ground sheet, and erecting a "Basha" or overnight shelter; jungle training; rubber & canvas jungle boots with an average life of 7-10 days; details of food and equipment needed for long periods on patrol in the jungle; cutting tracks through bamboo; checking for CTs (Communist terrorists); fording rivers. Views of Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Malay villages; families of the SAS in their army houses; leave in Kuala Lumur; shopping; an Indian temple; the 22 SAS Museum in Kuala Lumpur with examples of Malaysian tools and weapons including CT guns and hand-made saws; and a parade at Coronation park in Kuala Lumpur; various sporting activities. The bulk of the album shows paratroopers in action with NZ SAS members boarding a naval helicopter; practice helicopter landing drill; practice loading of casualties (helicopters being used chiefly for casualty evacuation); guiding helicopters to land; native people wathcing helicopters land; clearing in the jungle for landing strips. Troops preparing for parachute jumps; parachute packing hangar; donning parachutes; troops inside Vickers Valetta transport aircraft; aerial views from plane; jumping at 800 ft. Later in the album there are more images of parachute training indoors from a "FAN" trainer (so called because harness was attached to a wind fan which gave resistance equal to a parachute on a jump) from a platform about 30 ft high. Earlier training was taken at Takapau and Waiouru; use of camouflage nets; field cookhouse; wading a creek; night exercise; jeep ambush; "Angus" the goat (the squadron mascot); flying fox training; Bren gun training; paratrooper training in a gym; clothes and weapons; volunteers for the Special Air Service; followed by parades and farewell march through Wellington before leaving for Malaya. Description: Photographs of New Zealand military personnel serving in Greece, Crete, the Middle East and Egypt during World War 2, 1939-1945, taken by various photographers and compiled for official use. This album includes a number of official photographs taken for the British official records. Many of the personnel identified are listed above, but group portraits in which individuals are identified are not listed above. Many views show aspects of military training in the desert, including machine guns, rifles, manoeuvres, Bren guns, range practice, and anti-tank guns. New Zealand Divisional Cavalry. In England military training and preparation includes scenes of the New Zealand High Commissioner in London, William Joseph Jordan, watching New Zealand lumberjacks from the New Zealand Forestry Corps in a Gloucester forest felling trees for war purposes. Also related to England are scenes of the Duke of Gloucester inspecting troops, and King George VI at an investiture at Buckingham Palace investing Flight-Sergeant Williams with his Distinguished Flying Medal for gallantry in air operations. Long Range Desert patrols and expeditions into enemy territory showing the difficult terrain they had to negotiate. Views of a formation of five American-built Lockheed Hudson aircraft of the RAF Coastal Command carrying out an action patrol near Borkum, Heligoland and the Danish Coast. They are the first released photographs taken while under fire from German anti-aircraft ships, flying only 200 ft above the sea because of the weather (p 15-21). One image shows a wireless operator checking one of H.M. the King's homing pigeons, presented to the RAF to carry messages in case of a forced landing & breakdown of wireless. Description: Consists of images relating to Alexander Hamilton Knowles's army service during World War II between 1941 and 1944. Photographers are unidentified, but several images appear to be commercial tourist prints. Most of the photographs were probably taken by Knowles. The majority of photographs are hand dated. Some also feature brief annotations giving locations or other details. Many images relate to Knowles's service as a truck driver, showing the depot at Maadi Camp, the other drivers and different kinds of work involved. This includes showing the loading and transportation of food supplies, firewood, bricks, armoured vehicles and other materials. Accidents, repair jobs and recreational breaks are also shown. Other images show street scenes and famous sights in Egypt, including in Cairo and Alexandria. There are also photographs of similar subjects in Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. One print shows Knowles's unit on leave in Rome, 1944. Three images record a visit to the grave of Eddie Sapsford at the El Alamein Cemetery.
