Description: Family photographs of the Barnes family featuring the homestead Terewhiti and the following family members: Henry, Walter Ernest (Ernie - at various ages), Mary, Julia (Ernie's wife), Ernie's son Thomas, Lorraine, and Leslie. Also included are scenic views; scenes of mustering and shearing on the farm; Ernie and others in First World War uniforms; a burned down house; soldiers at Trentham camp eating a meal outside their tent (as a postcard signed by George McDermott to his brother and sister Alice and Bill); Lorraine Barnes taking part in a recording of the radio show The Quiz Kids as a member of the Hutt Valley team (The Quiz Kids was introduced by Selwyn Toogood in the 1950s); results of a national election being monitored on a wall chart ca 1930s; Ernie Barnes as captain of the Wellington Telephone Exchange Cricket Club; and two of officers and soldiers from the Second World War. Description: Exterior view of house designed and built in 1909 by Wellington arts and crafts architect, Walter Chapman-Taylor for James and Vera Bell. The house is constructed of wood, has many-paned casement windows, rough cast capped chimneys, and a marsailles tiled roof. Corrugated iron water tanks can be seen ranged against a tiled shed. The house is newly completed, and the garden is in the first stages of being developed. Photographed by Sarony Studio, Wellington in 1909. The interior doors of this house are braced by planks which have adzed-shaped sections cut into them. This was a trade mark of Walter Chapmen-Taylor. This photograph originally belonged to Andrew Bell, the son of Katherine Mansfield's sister Vera Bell (nee Beauchamp). This house burnt down in 1911 (info - Judy Siers). Description: View of the living room of house designed and built in 1909 by arts and crafts architect, Walter Chapman-Taylor for James and Vera Bell. The wooden floor is covered with large eastern rugs, on one of which stands a chair and gate-legged table. The internal walls are lined with bookshelves near which stand armchairs. The lower walls are covered with hessian, and the upper walls and ceiling with rough-cast plaster. Many-paned casement windows light the room, and a part of the dining room can be seen through the far door. There is no electric lighting. Photographed by Sarony Studios, Wellington, in 1909. The interior doors of this house are braced by planks which have adzed-shaped sections cut into them. This was a trade mark of Walter Chapmen-Taylor. Description: Comprises formal and informal group portraits relating to the clubs, bible classes, committees, and early significant events associated with St Giles Church, Kilbirnie. Taken by a range of photographers between 1908 and 1957, including Charles Boyer, Sarony Studios, and Wellington Photographic Works. Several of the photographs are annotated or captioned with names. Some photographs are accompanied by typescript notes [possibly written for display of the photographs]. Includes two photographs showing a crowd posing outside the church while it is under construction circa 1908. The views are taken at opposing angles and reveal a timber yard and a 1900s villa on either side of the church. One image is annotated "St Giles Kilbirnie laying of the foundation stone 7 October 1908". Includes a group portrait inscribed "Evans Bay Presbyterian Church Bazaar stall holders and committee Kilbirnie Wellington 1909". The accompanying note identifies the first church minister "Mr Douglas". Includes three group portraits of the St Giles tennis club [probably all taken during the 1930s]. Typed captions on the reverse list names of individuals. One image is annotated "St Giles tennis Club opening day Sept 26th 1936". One portrait of a crowd seated in a sports stand is annotated "Easter Camp 1932". Description: View of the dining room in house designed and built in 1909 by arts and crafts architect, Walter Chapman-Taylor for James and Vera Bell. The wooden floor is covered by a large rug. The view includes a gothic arched brick fireplace with curtained inglenook, lower wall of planks, and braced plank door. Two dining chairs can be seen, a morris chair, and part of a sideboard. The upper walls are covered with hessian, and the roof has dark beams over a tongue and groove plank ceiling. The wooden panneled fire surround supports decorative china plates, candle sticks, and pewter mugs. A hanging shelf above the inglenook beam also contains decorative china. Three prints above the fireplace are from paintings by the British symbolist artist, G F Watts, and two others are from Italian renaissance paintings. There is no electric lighting.
