[McFarlane, Francis Ledingham], 1888-1948 :An adventure in the Temple of Ram-Tek by J J...

Date: 1916 - 1919

Reference: B-182-012

Description: One side of the sheet shows a group of Arabs, probably in Egypt, passing by houses and palm trees. One is on horseback, one drives a laden donkey, and two veiled women carry pots and baskets on their heads. The other side of the sheet shows two sketches: One appears to be a cover or title illustration for a book by J J Stroud titled: "An adventure in the temple of Ram-Tek" and shows a domed temple on top of the hill. On an adjacent hill is a tall monument. This illustration is similar to the watercolour at E-290-q-013. In comparison with the actual temple of Ramtek in Madhya Pradesh, it appears as a domed mosque rather than a Hindu temple. The other sketch shows two servicemen discussing an examining a carved column in the shape of a rampant lion. It is the same column as that at E-288-q-014, a detail of a cornerpiece at the Belgian Palace at Heliopolis. Other Titles - Ramtek Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Three pencil sketches, on both sides of sheet, 288 x 446 mm. Transfers: This sheet was folded into the album at E-291-q, but was removed as it was too large..

Eccles, Martin Ashton :Photographs of Palestine and Gallipoli, 1914-1918

By: Eccles, Martin Ashton, 1893-1973; Eccles, Lesley, active 1998

Reference: PAColl-5863

Description: Martin Eccles of the Wellington Mounted Rifles went to Gallipoli with the 2nd Expeditionary Force. After Gallipoli he became part of the ANZAC Mounted Division in Palestine. Others record troop movements across the countryside, and towns such as Raffa and Jaffa. There are also one or two of the British High Command in Palestine photographed in informal situations. Time off on leave and visits to Egyptian antiquities are also represented. Finally, there are a few shots of Eccles in New Zealand either before or after the war. Martin Ashton Eccles remained in Gallipoli until the final disembarkation. He was in the army in Palestine until the end of the war. He became an Anglican priest and as Canon Eccles was attatched to the Diocese of Waipa (Waikato). Quantity: 300 b&w original photographic print(s). Campaign in Egypt and Palestine, 1916-1918. From Alexandria to El Arish

Date: 1916-1918

From: Powles family : Papers

Reference: PA1-q-604

Description: Album is the first part of a record of the British campaign in north-eastern Egypt and Palestine from 1916-1918. It begins with views of Alexandria and Cairo where Australian and New Zealand Troops from Gallipoli began their rest, and recovery. There are views of the troops at the military training camp at Zeitoun where they were retrained and equipped for the Western Front and the defence of Egypt. In relation to the Palestine campaign, the album covers the driving of the Turks and their German allies out of north-eastern Egypt, the capture of the oases of Quatia and Romani, and the subsequent capture of El Arish. The album is a very good record of these events with much incidental detail. Cities, architecture, ruins, places, the locals, farming, crops and farm animals are all included. Most usefully it is a good record of the military operations from the perspective of a New Zealand participant Arrangement: Negatives relating to prints in this album should be among those registered at F 178589 1/2 to F 178976 1/2, and F 178993 1/2 to F 179124 1/2 Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
