[Sakaria, Samuel], fl 1990-2000s :New Zealand 45c. 2005, Year of the Rooster [Merino sh...

Date: 2005

From: [Ephemera of octavo size relating to sheep breeds, sheep farming, and sheep health and diseases]

By: Sakaria, Samuel, active 1990-2000s

Reference: Eph-A-SHEEP-2005-01

Description: Sheet incorporates one stamp designed by Samuel Sakaria showing an adult merino sheep with two lambs. The stamp shows a silver fern logo at top left. Also on the sheet, to the right of the vertical perforation, is an illustration of a rooster, since the stamp was issued in 2005, the year of the rooster in the Chinese calendar. The adult sheep shown has a large set of horns indicating that it is a ram and not a ewe. However it has no other characteristics of a male sheep. The artist admitted to artistic licence for a more dynamic design. Farmers objected to the anatomical inaccuracy of the design which was supposed to show a ewe. The issue received media attention, for example, in the Christchurch "Press", 18 January 2005. See also http://www.nzherald.co.nz/postal-services/news/article.cfm?c_id=73&objectid=100 06952, for the article in the "New Zealand herald". Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph, stamp image 41 x 32 mm, on sheet with perforations, 53 x 46 mm. Provenance: Donated by Christine Petrie, Wellington, in 2011.
