Grant, Alexander Marshall, 1925-2011

Ballet dancer. Born in Wellington, he trained with Kathleen O'Brien and Jeane Horne. Mr Grant won a place at the Royal Acadmey Dancing School in 1945. From 1946-1970 he was associated with Sadlers Wells Ballet, becoming soloist, then Principal. Director of Ballet For All, 1970-1976, and then Artistic Director with the National Ballet of Canada 1976-1983. On retirement from Canada he became guest artist with the London Festival Ballet (now English National Ballet). Awarded CBE in 1965. Son of Alexander Gibb Grant (1900-1987) and Eleather May (née Marshall; b 1904). His partner for the last 54 years of his life was Jean-Pierre Gasquet.
