Description: Mr Anson Austin describes musical associations in family background, childhood memories and early musical experiences. Recalls his discovery and development of his voice by Clifton Cook at Christchurch Boys' High School, and his first engagements in New Zealand. Describes his first work with New Zealand Railways Engineering Department, and departure for London where he sang with the BBC singers. Recalls engagement by the Australian Opera Company, and his experiences in learning to sing opera. Describes development of his career as opera singer, and in partnering Joan Sutherland in Australian Opera appearances, including her farewell performances in 1990. Discusses coaching with Dominique Modesti and development of his voice 1970s-1980s. Recalls work in operetta, favourite singers, effect of New Zealand background and upbringing on voice and talent. Remembers humorous incidents in career and gives advice to singers starting out. Recalls coaching with Jack Metz and describes leisure activities and families. Description: Contains images of New Zealand opera singers collected during Peter Downes's research for the book `Southern voices' (1992). Most were taken in the 1950s-1990s period by unidentified photographers. Most images show the singers performing as part of opera productions, in New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom and elsewhere. Additional performers appear in many images. Also some promotional portraits, backstage shots and photographs related to some of the singers' backgrounds. Pencil and printed annotations identify many of the singers, productions and dates. Manuscript letter from Margaret Buist names the performers in one image. Also includes ca 1930s portrait of Australian baritone Fred Tuohy, who taught one of the opera singers, Denis Dowling.
