Waimate North Mission Station Church

Built 1839 to replace the original church built in 1830. Replaced in 1871 with the present church of St John the Baptist. The church was located at the mission station established by Richard David, George Clarke and James Hamlin.

Kauri, gingko biloba, and a waterlily garden

Description: Kauri seed laid on kauri wood, female and male kauri cones, and Tane Mahuta (giant kauri tree in the Waipoua Kauri Forest). A view of the Waimate North Mission Station Church; three views of a ginkgo biloba tree at the home of John Gilkison at Cambridge; three images taken at the home of Merta Alford (Harriet Mercy Alford) at Taotaoroa showing Sir Michael and Lady Inagh Parsons, visiting New Zealand. The last five images show scenes at a waterlily garden. Marked as being at Waitoa by Rhoda McWhannell, but possibly the Waihi Waterlily Gardens. They include water lilies in flower in the lake, the lake and bush, the water lily nursery, and one image of a yellow begonia plant in flower. Quantity: 20 colour original transparency/ies. Description: Page includes: Waimtai [Waimate] Church, and burial place of British officers. The church is described as "a structure of no pretension to beauty" Commanding officer's wau [whare?], Rua Pekapeka [Ruapekapeka] War dance of the New Zealanders. "The third scene shows a war dance of New Zealanders, got up for the amusement of the British, who are enjoying the grotesque exhibition. Around are seated some natives in the customary cloak; and a monster mortar, belonging to the British, is shown on the right" External cavern - within a Maori fortified pa Internal cavern and connecting passage - within a Maori fortified pa Group of Maories - shows four Maori men, three of them standing and one seated on the ground at the left in a cloak. Description: An extensive view at Waimate North, with a windmill, the mission station and the church on the horizon. Bracken in the foreground and a rutted dirt road running away into the distance. Fenced paddocks to the right and three small people walking away on the road to the left. Several dead trees in the foreground. Compare a very similar work by Cyprian Bridge at A-079-035 The work appears to have been part of a sketchbook at an earlier stage, with signs of having been bound on its left side. Probably removed by the Library from album E-320-f, which contained 16 sketches on acquisition by Alexander Turnbull in 1893. Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s to 1871. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in this album at p. 51) The Thames goldfields are shown in a number of images, including some with captions Shortland and Grahamstown (now part of Thames); the Moanataira [i.e. Moanatairi] wire tramway, with the Rainbow Hotel nearby; Hunt's claim (known as the Shotover Mine); the Missouri Battery; the Bank of New Zealand building at Grahamstown; and miners' huts. The timber industry is shown with kauri logs being transported by bullock teams and awaiting transport by water. Photographs associated with Maori include military outposts at Terewera (i.e. Tarawera) and Ormond; "Kawiti's Runanga, or court houses, now `tapu', Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 21); "limestone caves at Waiomeo [sic], Bay of Islands; the burial place of the Mangakahia tribe. Strictly tapu" (p. 22); "Group at Waimeo feast, Bay of Islands" (p. 20); "Native feast - or bone-scraping at the burial of the remains of several chiefs at Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 46); "Waipawa Valley, Poverty Bay, scene of the massacre by Te Kooti" (p. 47); "Here the moa feet impressions were found, Poverty Bay, Sept. 1871, D.L.M."
