Some figures appear to be Maori, and there are crossed canoe paddles forming the open end of the tent or whare on the right. The view is located in southern Akaroa, in 'English Town' Compare with ink sketch of same scene, with same title and date, also by Mantell (A-049-023). Description: Shows two cottages close to one another, one with a thatched roof, at a bend on the banks of the Avon, in a treeless landscape, close to Barbadoes Street, the landing place for boats coming up the Avon from the Estuary and sea. The Bricks was built of bricks made by the Deans brothers of Riccarton. There are several other smaller buildings on the right.
