Tahuna, Te Wharekauri, 1805?-1908

Ngati Manawa and Te Arawa priest and chief. First painted by Goldie in 1906 and re-painted in 1910, 1938 and 1941, (and possibly other dates as well) from photographs and earlier paintings. He spent most of his life in the Urewera country, and fought in the musket wars of the 1830s, at Te Tumu in and Te Ariki (Tarawera) in 1836. He was said to be aged 103 at his death in 1908 at Murupara.
