Description: The letters are mainly correspondence made up by Houston in chronological order. The letters are mainly concerned with Houston's interest in the Maori people and their history, Maori artefacts and archaeology. Also included are letters concerned with the socities to which Houston belonged, and the various functions at which he spoke for these societies. The correspondents include Marion Chapman-Taylor, J Brydon Speedy (these were both members of the Palmerston North branch of the Polynesian Society), J Litt, Alan Houston (brother), Harold Miller, C R H Taylor, T Barrow, Maurice Jenner, etc. There are also a number of purely personal letters, reports and memos by Houston on artefacts found in Taranaki, suggestions to societies on a variety of matters, and replies to queries about Taranaki history and Maori history. Also letters from A T Ngata, mainly concerned with the improvement in Maori living conditions and standards of hygiene, 1936-1938.
