Description: Programme booklet with cover illustration of a clown playing a guitar, by Alan Raphael. Contains a message form the mayor John Miller, and the Prime Minister J G Coates; a short account of the tradition of May Fair Week and its first celebration in Southland in the previous year, 1927. Contains a three-page history of Southland and a three-page description of Invercargill. There is a photograph of two men dressed as the May Fair Mayor and Mayoressuding a procession, illuminations, children's sports, "A night in Venice", the Grand Pageant of Southland, poultry show, axemen's carnival, grand military tattoo, procession of illuminated and decorated lorries and cars, and grand fancy dress masked balls in various halls. On the sixth day there was a children's pet parade, children's costume parade, and dancing in costume. The final pages bescribe Gore, Nightcaps, Riverton, Otautau and Lumsden. Description: Comprises 11 letters from Charles H Turner and Frank C Turner to their mother in England while they were sailing to New Zealand, travelling round New Zealand followed by a visit to Australia. Three of the letters are from Charles and eight are from Frank. They were written on board ship, the `Kent' and the `Tarama', and while they were travelling in New Zealand and Australia. Both sons describe life on board ship, the people they were travelling with, ports visited, activities on board ship and describe in some detail the various places they visited in New Zealand (Papakura, where their brother had a farm, Waikato, Lyttelton, Wellington, Bluff, Dunedin, Nelson, Auckland and Taranaki) and Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart Town). Description: Account of the journey from Milford Sound to Sutherland Falls, over McKinnon Pass to Lake Te Anau. Eleanor, aged eleven, accompanied a survey party led by her father Charles Adams who was Chief Surveyor for the Otago Province. She recalls that the tarn on top of the Pass was named Lake Ella in her honour. Source of title - Transcribed Eleanor (`Ella') Adams was the daughter of C W Adams, an Otago surveyor.
