Bothamley family: Papers and photographs

Description: A collection of papers and photographs accumulated by members of the Bothamley family. Manuscript materials comprise mainly inwards correspondence from New Zealand political leaders, Governors-General, and other well known persons (including three letters from Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull, written between 1908-1910); greeting cards; clippings of signatures taken from letters; invitations; a volume of verse by John Rigg; and printed ephemera. Photographic materials comprise loose black and white photographs relating to Henry Jackson and Sir James Hector and family; three photograph albums, and a film negative showing Tauwhitinui Pā. Members of the Bothamley family had close connection to the New Zealand Parliament over many years. Arthur Thomas Bothamley began working in the Legislative Council in 1871, and served as the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod 1892-1937. His sons Charles Mildmay Bothamley and Grafton Francis Bothamley both served as clerks of the House and of Parliament. Charles Mildmay also worked for W and G Turnbull circa 1909; and Grafton Francis was a personal friend of Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull. Physical Description: Photograph albums, loose black and white photographic prints, annotated and typescript letters and envelopes (soem with stamps), greeting cards, notes, and printed ephemera Provenance: Phyllis Lucinda Bothamley, daughter of Arthur Thomas and Elizabeth Bothamley, had an interest in autographs, and may have originally collected the manuscript materials in this collection. They and the photographic materials were in possession of her sister Mrs Hester Elizabeth Reid prior to donation to the Library. Transfers: Donated with manuscript material see MS-Papers-0603. - One loose print of a Māori village scene was extracted from this collection by the Library for use in the file prints catalogue, and is now housed at Library reference PAColl-5671-43.. Processing information: The materials in this collection were previously split into separate collections. As they are of the same provenance a new collection description was created in November 2018. Not all names are indexed in this collection.

Description: Binet's diary covers the period 15 Dec 1941 to 18 Nov 1943 and contains a day by day account of his wartime activities. Entries cover the North African Campaign until its end on 13 May 1943. Diary continues with personal commentary on life in camp while many men were on furlough in New Zealand. Appended into the volume is a letter to Binet from his parents (26 Dec 1942) and a printed menu for the 18 N.Z. Armd Regt. Reunion Dinner held at the Chez Restaurant Florida in Cairo on Thursday 12 August 1943. The menu has 56 autographs from those that attended the dinner. Quantity: 1 volume(s).

Taken by a range of photographers, most of whom are unidentified. - Contains images relating to Unwin's performances as a violinist when he was a child, playing the piano accordion (and winning Wellington Competitions Society trophy), and as a double bassist and pianist with various groups. Images include staged group and candid individual portraits of Unwin both by himself and performing with others. Images of note are an orchestra playing in a back yard, a music group by a band rotunda, and a dance band at a party in Upper Hutt [W Beavis?]. - Also contains images from Unwin's time working in Australia. Description: Photographs of various women in Harry Unwin's life, 1940s-1950s, some of whom he may have been romantically involved with. Taken by a range of photographers, many of whom are unidentified. - Contains portraits of women, many of whom have autographed and sent their image to Unwin. Includes studio portraits and glamour photographs. Some first names are given, including "Norma", "Glad", "Miskey", "Betty", "Mona", "Margaret", 'Joan", and "Elvie", but many are unidentified. One image features a topless woman on the beach. - Includes a series of images of dancer Billie Ponds. These include professional stage shots in costume and studio portraits that she has given to Unwin. Ponds has autographed or annotated the rear of a number of the images. Also includes images of Unwin and Ponds together by a fountain and at a railway station, and Ponds with an older woman [possibly her mother?]. Another series features a blond woman identified only as "Elese" and includes professional portraits in a swimsuit and high-heeled shoes on a beach as well as informal snapshots [possibly taken by Unwin?]. Entries date from her time as a nursing sister at Wellington Hospital and to her service as a military nurse during World War I in Samoa and on board New Zealand Hospital Ship 'Maheno' (1915-1916). Includes contributions from soldiers Matron Brooke treated, as well as fellow medical staff. Entries vary in length from names and dates to single page letters. Entries also include sayings as well as quotations from poems (including John Keats). One entry is in te reo Maori. Entries in the album include personal messages, poetry, and quotations mostly of religious themes and sources, including a transliteration of a Chinese doxology and bible quotations, and examples of Chinese, Indian, Tamil, and Ceylonese scripts. Some pages decorated with mounted postage stamps. Sketches include a pair of birds, dated 23 May 1911, sailing boats, dated 1920, watercolour and pencil harbour scene with sailing and row boats, signed Horn, dated 1901, watercolour of people at the seaside with sailing vessels and a windmill, signed I Gresham, dated 1912, and a pen drawing of a bagpiper.
