St. George's (School : Whanganui, N.Z.)

Established in 1927 by the Whanganui College Board of Trustees (the governing body for the Collegiate School) decided to extend the benefits of its secondary system to the primary area. For over 50 years the school functioned as a boys' only boarding school, but in 1980 it extended its enrolments to include girls, and the boarding finished at the same time.

Description: Photographs of Sir Francis and Lady Bell's houses at Lowry Bay; the family of Harold Featherston Johnston; girl students of the Convent of the Sacred Heart (later Erskine College) Island Bay Wellington; a cricket team and student group taken at St Georges School Wanganui; wedding groups. The weddings are of Kathleen and Willie Levin (of the Levin & Co family), Naney and Douglas Young, Jocelyn Riddiford and Jim Vogel, Betty and Ralf Lowry, and Barbara and Stephen Glover. They date from 1931 to about 1943. Caroline Johnston's father, Harold, was a son of Charles John Johnston of Homewood, Karori, Wellington. The Johnston family and descendents lived at Homewood from 1852 to 1925 (info from "Homewood and its Families". Smedley, Beryl. Mallinson Rendel, Wellington, 1980). Andrea recalls travelling and living in Rome where she met Brit who was there on a fellowship at the American Academy. Brit describes his art projects and they both talk about their time together in southern California, Arizona and New York. Andrea gives a detailed account of the area in New York where they lived communally with about thirty people. Both discuss how their perceptions changed about their living conditions once their child, Noah, was born, and their decision to move. Brit describes his reaction to the Wanganui job advertisement for a sculptor at the Department of Fine Arts in the Polytechnic. Describe their expectations of New Zealand and both consider they have been met. Brit talks about the USA public art commissions he is missing by being in New Zealand and elaborates on his thoughts on career opportunities. Andrea describes how she is perceived at St George's School where she teaches art. They discuss celebrations and family holiday dinners in the States.
