Description: Album of photographs taken aboard Maunganui on following voyages: Port Chalmers to Liverpool, England. Left Port Chalmers 2 May 1918, called at Wellington (3-9 May 1918), Balboa (28 May 1918), Panama Canal and Colon (29-30 May 1918), Norfolk VA (4-10 June 1918), New York (11-12 June 1918), arrived Liverpool 24 July 1918. Three Transatlantic crossings between Liverpool, Glasgow, and New York, August-November 1918. Liverpool, England, to Port Chalmers, with returned New Zealand soldiers. Left Liverpool 2 December 1918, called at Colon (18-19 December 1918), Panama Canal and Balboa (19 December 1918), Auckland (9 January 1919), Wellington (11-15 January 1919), arrived Port Chalmers 16 January 1919. Includes views of Panama Canal locks and gates, ferries at Norfolk VA, United States and British warships, soldiers playing two-up on the ship returning home, and ferries in Auckland Harbour. Description: Album includes a large section of British naval ships, some travelling in convoy, some camouflaged, with closeup views of armaments and naval personnel, taken by unidentified photographers during World War I. It appears that the creator of the album was serving on the SS Parattah. A section in the album covers a port-of-call by the Parattah to Nauru and the Loyalty Islands, showing scenes and aspects of life on the islands, including several related to the phosphate industry on Nauru. There are a number of images of a group on camels near the Spinx and pyramids in Egypt, dated 1919, followed by a section on the Yosemite area, California, with scenic views of mountains and valleys, and several showing the "largest tree in the world". The last section in the album covers the royal tour of HRH The Prince of Wales in 1920, in Sydney. Description: Photograph album of Wellington and World War One scenes, 1900-1918. Photographer(s) unidentified. The portion of the album with captions is likely compiled by Mary Vida Pearce. Contains photograph of ponies and a garden at Lowry Bay as well as Wellington Harbour and wharf scenes, including a dredge. Shipboard scenes on the SS 'Athenic' show the bridge and deck with Miss Reece (photographed skipping), Mr Jones (First Officer), and Mr Morrow (Third Officer) identified. Album also includes photographs of street scenes and buildings in Vannes and Auray (France) and harbour and town scenes in Padstow (England). World War One photographs, which do not have captions, show military personnel [medics?] ouside a tent with the number "5" written on its side. Soldiers are also photographed in a trench with machine guns and rifles as well as resting in the shade. Also includes a photograph of a military convoy with horses and carts and a beach scene. Photographs of aerial and naval operations include aircraft crashed in the sea and a zepplin in flight. Description: Flattened narrow copper pipe, and a slightly charred piece of a canvas water ballast bag. The Zeppelin L-31 was piloted by Captain Heinrich Mathy. He had dropped several tons of bombs on London and was attacked by anti-aircraft fire as he left. Second Lieutenant W.J. Tempest dove his plane under the airship, firing a drum of Brock-Pomeroy ammunition into the ship's keel. The Zeppelin went straight down, landing at Potter's Bar. Mathy jumped clear, and survived the jump unburnt but died only a few minutes later (See "The war times journal" at www.richthofen.com/dark_autumn). Quantity: 2 curio(s). Description: Shows five allied (Anzac) soldiers walking in enemy territory on a moonlit night, with bayonets and rifles, and taking the enemy soldiers by surprise. There is a pitchfork through the stomach of one fat enemy soldier; another is being hit over the head with a rifle butt, another is surpised in his burrow by a soldier with a bayonet, and one is fished out of a chimney on the point of a bayonet. There is an explosion in one of the rough huts. Two blimps are in the sky overhead. The title of the cartoon is sarcastic, meaning the opposite of what is shown.
