Chiefly images of places and people relating to the Tuhoe prophet Rua Kenana Hepetipa, taken between late 1977 and early 1978 during two trips made by Binney and Chaplin to the Ureweras. (Note: The purpose of the initial trip in 1977 was to take copies of historical photographs relating to Rua, to the people of Maungapohatu, in the hope of identifying unknown faces.) Some of Chaplin's photographs were later published in the book by Binney, Chaplin and Craig Wallace - Mihaia: the prophet Rua Kenana and his community at Maungapohatu (Wellington, NZ: Oxford University Press, ca 1979). Description: Colour and black and white prints of images taken at the launch of the book "Nga Morehu: The survivors" by Binney and Gillian Chaplin, by Gil Hanly on the 27th of November 1986 at Waipapa Marae, University of Auckland. The images show people at an outdoor gathering where they move on to the marae grounds, are seated, listen to speeches and talk together afterwards. Reverend Tawhao Tioke is one of the speakers. Some show Binney and Gillian Chaplin as they stand around a table with many copies of "Nga Morehu" which are later given out. Many show people holding the book. Particularly featured are five of the women who were interviewed for the book: Hei Ariki Algie, Heni Brown, Maaka Jones, Heni Sunderland and Miria Rua. Others include Ranginui Walker, the daughters of Huti Onekawa - Noti and Moe, and the daughters of Reremoana Koopu - Iri Koopu and Toma Walker. Description: Negatives of images taken by Gillian Chaplin between 1982 and 1985 during research by Chaplin and Binney into the life histories of eight Maori women connected with the Ringatu faith founded by Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki. The eight women are Hei Ariki Algie, Heni Brown, Maaka Jones, Reremoana Koopu, Putiputi Onekawa, Miria Rua, Heni Sunderland, Te Akakura Rua. Images show: portraits of the women; some family members including copies of older family photographs; places, buildings and monuments significant to their lives. Also seven photographs taken at a Kohanga reo Christmas party in 1984. Many images later published in the book by Binney and Chaplin - Nga Morehu = The survivors (Auckland, N.Z. : Oxford University Press, 1986) Quantity: 91 b&w original negative(s) strips with 470 images. Description: Black and white photographic prints, taken at an event relating to (probably the launch of) the book 'Mihaia: the prophet Rua Kenana and his community at Maungapohatu' by Binney, Gillian Chaplin and Craig Wallace, at an unidentified location in November 1979. One image taken by The Bay of Plenty Times. Others taken by an unidentified photographer. The images show people at an indoor gathering. Te Akakura Rua features in many of them, wearing her mother's greenstone brooch. Also features Binney, Gillian Chaplin, Tom Collins, Dr Ranginui Walker, Dick Scott, Greer Twiss, and possibly Elizabeth Mountain.
