Description: This grouping of photographic prints relates to artist and writer Alan Taylor. Taken by Daniel Masters, Alan Taylor, and unidentified photographer(s) between 1975 and 1990. Many prints have captions or annotations related to publishing processes. Some prints have matching negatives. Comprises: - Two sets of prints related to the book 'Maori Folk Art' by Alan Taylor. Black and white images taken in 1975 show an exterior view of St John the Baptist Church at Waimate North and the gravestone headboard of Paea Kahuru carved by Nutana Mapi, and a portrait of a Samoan minister and his wife in their bedroom. Colour images taken circa 1980s-1990 show graffiti bombing in Ponsonby, and a flagpole carved as an ancestral marakihau figure at Waimana, Urewera (ET/AT:001). - Two colour exterior views of a colonial villa on Ponsonby Road, Auckland, taken circa 1970s-1980s by Alan Taylor (ET/AT:007). - One set of images related to Alan Taylor's research and writing interests concerning Maori architecture and built structures. Includes a black and white exterior of the Holy Trinity Church, Pakaraka, Northland, taken circa 1980s. The colour images taken in 1987 show various marae and rural locations including the Orakau battlesite memorial; Te Tokanganui-a-Noho meeting-house and urupa, Te Kuiti; the Mangapehi marae; Te Hape marae; Rongokarae and other wharenui at Waimana; Ko Te Poho O Tamaterangi and other wharenui at Ruatoki; and rural homes and wharenui at Urewera. A few views show Alan Taylor, Robert Oti and Daniel Marsters visiting the marae. Description: Slides of images collected by Judith Binney relating to her research on Rua Kenana Hepetipa. Some photographs taken in 1981. Others taken circa 1981. Photographer unidentified, possibly Binney. Six images show a red flag labelled with the words 'Rua Tupua'. Four show wooden carvings representing Tangata Iti and Paikea (with tuku tuku panels and photographs alongside) inside the house Toi kai rakau at Waikirikiri marae in Ruatoki. Further images comprise one of a wooden carved statue in Rotora showing a figure holding a lizard, and one looking towards a small house in a rural area. Binney has identified this last image as 'Rua. Whare Karakia. Te Teko'. Description: Photographic negatives of images from two rolls of film, taken by Judith Binney in 1999, chiefly of land and coastal areas on, and near, the former sites of Matakerepu Pa and Whakarae Pa, near Ohiwa Harbour. Also images of an exhibition held at Gisborne Army Hall. Also images of roadside graffiti reading "DOC is poisoning Te Urewera Ban Poison" Also images of murals at Taneatua (Whakatane district) by an unidentified artist. One features a peeling copy of a photograph taken in 1908 by George Bourne, showing the Levites (Riwaiti), Rua Kenana's teaching order. Underneath, partly exposed, is the Tuhoe flag. One features Rua Kenana riding the white horse of Te Kooti over the great plateau of Maungapohatu, carrying the flag of Maungapohatu confiscated by the police in 1916. Corresponding prints are at PAColl-9928-14. (Note: There are no corresponding prints for the 10 of the mural images at 35mm-100268 to 100270). Accompanying information - Paper packets that originally held prints and negatives, have a few descriptive notes by Binney and are held at PAColl-9928-14. Other - Negatives 35mm-100268-100270 were found amongst Binney's papers, after the set 35mm-99494-99505 had been described. 35mm-100268-100270 appear to belong with 35mm-99494-99505, and have been described with them.
