Judge left New Zealand in Oct 1915 and served in Palestine with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. Description: Memoir of service during World War One written by James McMillan who served with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles and transcribed by E D McCabe. He wrote the memoir in the late 1960s and includes his views on how New Zealand entered the war and what it meant to serve in the forces. He describes training, leaving for the Middle East, the Battle of Surafend, contact and trouble with local people, life as a soldier, the various locations they found themselves in. He also includes a list of the horses and riders in the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Racing Club meeting at Rafa (5 Feb 1919). Description: `Diary of Herbert Denton, 27th Mounted Rifles (later Wellington Mounted Rifles) , May 1917 - April 1919' (transcribed by Margaret Denton, 1993-1994). The diary contains a detailed account of Denton's war experiences in the Palestine Campaign from the time he sailed from Wellington on 31 May 1917 until his return home to Levin, 22 April 1919. As well as describing his participation in the fighting against Turkish forces he also describes visiting places of interest in Egypt and Palestine. Description: Details of family background and growing up in Maungatawhiri Valley, also Territorials, enlistment, Mount Cook barracks, training as a 'semi-vet' to care for horses. Recalls voyage to Egypt on 'Aparima' - a horse boat, the deaths, his duties caring for the horses. He joined the Mounted Rifle Brigade at Hill 70 and describes his training and the conditions at camp and the Battles of Rafa, Magdhaba, Gaza, Tel el Fara, the 2nd Battle of Gaza, Richon Le Zion and Ankara with reference to duties 'boundary riding'. Recalls raid on Surafend, also Jerusalem, Jericho, West Bank, Jordan Valley, 1st Battle of Amman, Battle of Damia and the 2nd Battle of Amman. Gives details of the Wazir, recreation, Cairo, venereal disease and malaria. Returned to New Zealand in December 1919 on the 'Ulimaroa' after being in the peace-keeping force. Went onto a rehabilitation farm at Waitakaruru and farmed for the rest of his working life. Recalls the Depression and its effects. Gives views on Anzac Day. Description: Contains photographs relating to the Sinai and Palestine campaigns of World War I, taken by various, mainly unidentified, photographers. - Includes photographs relating to the New Zealand Mounted Rifles, mainly the Auckland Mounted Rifles. Images feature military transportations and convoys including those featuring camels carrying supplies and fording a waadi, horses, mules, the S S 'Willochra' at steam, the Auckland Regiment Transport camped at Bethlehem in August 1918, the construction of the first ANZAC bridge over the River Jordan and various groups crossing it, and a convoy that has been attacked on the Beyrout [Beirut] Road with dead animals and wrecked carts, and a convoy on the road to Jerusalem near the Garden of Gethsemane. Other images include Turkish and German prisoners of war (including a large group at Kastal and a small group of officers), war graves and burial scene, the bodies of two soldiers killed in action, various military camps (including Ferry Post Camp), air craft (including a plane that has been shot down and H M A 'Carthusian' taken by A J Iles), the wreck of a British Mother Tank in Gaza, and an unidentified man posing beside an anti-aircraft gun. Recreation scenes show the New Zealand sports day at Richon and rugby game between New Zealand and Australian troops on New Year's Day 1919. - General Allenby appears in a number of images including motoring through Paris following victory in Jerusalem and at the New Zealand sports day at Richon, Palestine (also with Major General Edward William Clervaux Chaytor). A group photograph shows unidentified soldiers on board the S S 'Willochra', an unidentified portrait taken by T G Palmer (Cameron Street, Whangarei) with four young soldiers in uniform, and four men mounted on horses after winning hurdles team event at Tauherenikau in 1918. - Includes one aerial image of an unidentified coastal camp. Description: Folder comprises a typed transcript of Trooper James H Parker's First World War diary while serving in Palestine from January 1918 to after the Armistice and the disbandment of the squadron for the return to New Zealand. Gives accounts of the fighting, raids by Taube monoplanes, sports and social activity. There is a brief mention of the Surafend affair on 10 Dec 1918 where a New Zealand soldier was killed by a Bedouin, and over 40 Bedouin were killed in retaliation. Includes photocopies of labelled photographs, list of abbreviations and terms used by Parker, transcription from the back cover of the diary, giving addresses, memoranda of horses used, requisitions and letters written, copies from the army newspaper 'Kia Ora Coo-ee' of articles and clippings.
