Includes: - Infantry marching, and riding on both horse and camel back, heading to and from battle, - Turkish prisoners and guns which have been captured, - Military camp near El Arish, - A minesweeper wrecked off the coast, - Hospital, hospital train, and wounded soldiers being transported by Red Cross carts, - and a football match between Auckland and Wellington troops. Description: The collection includes letters to his family prior to and during World War One and records of his military service with the Indian Army (1912-1937) and subsequent arrangements for transferring back from his post with the Fiji Defence Force (1941-1942) Source of title - Supplied Cuthbert William Free was educated at Christ's College, Christchurch, and partly completed a law degree at Canterbury College. He left New Zealand as a lieutenant with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles in Sep 1914 and later transferred to the Canterbury Infantry Battalion. He saw service in Egypt, Gallipoli, France and Belgium. In Dec 1917 he transferred to the Indian Army and served in it until 1937. In 1941 he arranged to transfer back to the Indian Army from his post as a staff officer with the Fijian Defence Force. Description: Collection of letter books, letters, transcriptions and a scrapbook from the period July 1915 to August 1918 providing detailed accounts of Gray's experiences during this period. Comprises of a series of eight letter books and individual letters addressed to his family in New Zealand during the period of his service in Egypt, France and Belgium during World War One. Includes photocopies of typescript transcriptions of the letter books based on the carbon copies sent to New Zealand, featuring some contextual manuscript annotations. Also includes standing orders for the Base Depot dated June - October 1918. Source of title - Supplied title Randolph Norman Gray studied law at Canterbury University and worked as a legal clerk in Dunedin, before enlisting as a Corporal on 15 July 1915. Embarking from Wellington with the Medical Corps, 1st Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, on 9 October 1915, he arrived in Egypt the following month. In April 1916 he went on to serve with the New Zealand Field Ambulance Corps in NZEF as a stretcher bearer and hospital orderly in France. By April 1917 he was attending an Officer's Training Course in England, before returning to France in July. After recuperating from injuries sustained in action in December he served the remainder of the war as Adjutant at the New Zealand Infantry and General Base Depot at Etaples.
