Description: Continuing an earlier comic strip format, where the spaceship Long White Cloud is in orbit, skippered by Captain Kiwi Keith (Prime Minister Keith Holyoake), the imminent election makes the government nervous. Co-pilot John Marshall (Deputy Prime Minister) describes the outlook as a bit murky, as control of the target vehicle (the economy) is unpredictable and hazardous. There are also plots to take over the controls (Labour's Norman Kirk and Social Credit's Vernon Cracknell). A clipping has the suggestion made by the Social Credit leader, Vernon Cracknell, that housewives balance their family accounts better than the government. The first suggestion is using leftovers, to which Muldoon replies there are never any. The next is to raid the children's money boxes - Pinch the child allowance? Political suicide! The next is to borrow from neigbours and forget to pay it back - No show! The next is someone to get money out of whenever you're short, to which he replies, The I.M.F.? No, she says, a husband. Description: There are two parts to the cartoon. In the top part Murray Halberg, Kerry Williams and Gerald Hack reach the finishing line in a race and in the lower part are the heads of Walter Nash, Jack Holyoake and Vernon Cracknell, Labour, National and Social Credit respectively. They were the leaders of the three parties contesting the 1960 general election. The cartoon is a game in which the head of the winner of the election is to be superimposed over the face of the winner in the race and the same for second and third place.
