Robertson, John, 1875-1952

Born in Scotland. A watchmaker and foundation member of the British ILP in 1892. Associated with Keir Hardie. On arrival in New Zealand became a prominent member of the New Zealand Federation of Labour and wrote articles for the Maoriland worker. 1911 election won Otaki on the second ballot as an Independent Socialist candidate with New Zealand Labour Party and Socialist party support. Joined the ULP in 1912 and the SDP in 1913. Defeated as SDP candidate for Otaki in 1914. MP for Masterton 1935-1943 and member of Legislative Council 1946-1950. (Who's who in NZ, 1941)
