Description: Philip Allan Bemrose born Auckland 1913. Outlines family background - father served in the Boer War [South African War] in the Mounted Infantry. Recalls his mother's death, funeral and burial etc when he was three years. Describes relationship with father. Gives details of years at Auckland Grammar School. Recalls first job with the Goldie Timber Company, Auckland and describes the artist, Charles Goldie, who came into the office regularly. Outlines career with Customs Department, commencing in Auckland 1934. Recalls introduction of Sales Tax the day after he started. Talks about the Depression (1930s). Discusses: different divisions within Customs; new system of gauging spirits; victimisation within the Department; parcels post; uniform staff; attitudes to women and social life. Describes the impact of World War II on the Department. Talks about own service; volunteering for the Navy, training on Motuihi at HMNZS Tamaki; the Air Force Training Camp at Wigram; being at sea from late 1942 until early 1944 and arrival in Britain; becoming an instructor at Portsmouth until the end of the war. Talks about four month secondment to United Kingdom Customs afterwards and discusses differences between United Kingdom and New Zealand customs in the 1940s. Refers to Diploma in Public Administration. Recalls being appointed Secretary to Walter Nash, Minister of Finance, 1949. Description: Harcourt Chenoweth Werry (known as Harc to his family and Chen to his friends) born 1909, was for thirty five years in local body work in Lower Hutt and at one time was Deputy Mayor and also Water Nash's chairman for a number of years. Outlines family background - grandfather, William Werry arrived in New Zealand 1870s and settled in Timaru as a stone mason and builder. Recalls school days and being Dux of Belfast School; sport, including tennis and rugby; being a pupil teacher at Reefton and joining Public Service 1927 working in the Registrar General's Office for 18 months before changing to Smith and Smith. Describes his work with Smith and Smith during the Depression. Recalls his work for the Labour Party ca 1937 and describes Walter Nash. Refers to the Free Milk Scheme (Randwick School) mid 1930s and involvement of Mr Roberts.
