Born in Australia, he came to New Zealand in 1907, married Gwendoline Evelyn Meadows in Dunedin in 1912, and moved to Invercargill. Became union secretary while working for the Invercargill Tramways, then President of the General Labourers' Union. Was a member of the Invercargill Borough Council, and chaired the works committee in the 1930s. Was Labour Member of Parliament for Awarua, 1935-1946. Legislated for the establishment of the Invercargill Licensing Trust 1944, and fought for a special fund for writers, leading to the establishment of the Literary Grants Advisory Board. Chaired the Invercargill Savings Bank, had a leading role as a Salvationist, and was interested in native birds. [Source: Southern people; a dictionary of Otago Southland biography]
