Garland, Nick, 1935-

Cartoonist. Born in London, but spent seven formative years in New Zealand (1947-1954) attending Rongotai College and later becoming a member of the New Zealand Players. At 19 he returned to London, attended the Slade School of Fine Art (1954-57), worked as a stage manager at the Royal Court Theatre and co-directed plays at the Phoenix. With writer Barry Humphries he created the "Barry McKenzie" strip in "Private Eye" (1964-74) and later became political cartoonist on the "Daily telegraph" (1966-1986). In 1986 he left the "Telegraph" to join the newly-founded "Independent" (1986-1991). He returned to the "Telegraph" in 1991. He also contributeds to the "Spectator" (London) in the 1990s.
