Description

Black and white photographic prints developed by Sharon Smith between 2001 and 2016 from three glass negatives taken by an unidentified photgrapher between circa 1910 and 1919. Includes:

- two prints of a photograph depicting crowds on balconies of the Trocadero Private Hotel (at 296 Lambton Quay) and the building which housed the Returned Soldiers Club and Gamble and Creed tearooms (at 292 Lambton Quay). British flags and banners and a 'Welcome Digger' poster are hung from the balconies. Probably taken after December 1919 and before 1923 in relation to the return of World War One soldiers.

- one print of a photograph depicting a man [possibly McGregor B Wright or George B Wright] wearing round spectacles and a moustache and holding a certificate or large card, while standing in front of a framed photograph exhibition depicting scenic views of Wanganui, Wellington Town Hall. Probably taken 1918-1920s.

- one print of a studio portrait depicting four children posed on chairs in front of drapery, probably taken between 1910-1929.

Dates of original negative images based on subject location information. Gamble and Creed Tearooms opened on Lambton Quay circa 10 December 1919 (see 'Unititled' Freelance 10 December 1919).
