New Zealand Polynesian Festival, 6-8 February 1981

Scenes at the Avondale Racecourse at the New Zealand Polynesian Festival, in February 1981. Frames one and two show a group of young men standing below the grandstand, one of whom has a transistor beatbox under his arm; a number of people of different ages are joining in a waiata a ringa (action song) on a stage, with three small children in the foreground (frame 4). The next four frames (4 to 8) were taken looking up at crowds in the grandstand. They include two women wearing costumes for performance sitting on the ground in the foreground (frame 5), and a pākeha man holding a transistor in the right foreground (frame 8). Ans Westra has focused on a woman sitting in a group on a flat area with the grandstand in the background (frames 9 to 12). She is wearing a full costume with piupiu (flax skirt), pari (bodice), pari (headband), and a large bone hei tiki. Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified.
