- Description
Images show scenes from the annual coronation hui held at Turangawaewae Marae, Ngaruawahia, taken in 1963 by Ans Westra. Unless otherwise stated all persons are unidentified.
Images show scenes of people attending the annual coronation celebrations and include kuia (two named as Mary Kite and Mihi Moore) some of them providing entertainment between proceedings by performing on the veranda of a meeting house; Canon Wi Huata seated nearby; children playing on a path outside a house; and a group of young men lying on the grass outside the same house smoking cigarettes. Two of the young men, Pou Poutapu and Mati Muru, were identified in 2009. Other names given are Genie Paikau, Choppie Hiwinui, and Bobby and Mati Muru. All of those named here were identified at a later date by an unidentified attendee at the hui. Information from enlarged proofsheets produced for an exhibition in 2009.
