Images show the welcoming of the Right Reverend H.W. Baines, Bishop of Wellington, on to Putiki Marae, Whanganui, taken in 1963 by Ans Westra. Unless otherwise stated all persons are unidentified.
Images show scenes of the powhiri to welcome Bishop Baines on to the marae. The Bishop was there for the memorial service of Tenga Takarangi. Also includes images of kuia watching, as well as the performance of waiata a ringa (action songs). The meeting house, Te Paku-o-te-Rangi, can be seen in the background.
Frames 9-12 show, from left, Pei Te Hurinui Jones, of Taumarunui, Mrs Maraenui Iwikau of Tokorangi, Halcombe, Mrs Rangitaamo Takarangi (widow of the late Tenga Takarangi) and Mr Henare Tuwhangai of Ohaupo.
