Description

Discusses early roading construction and the roading construction company Isherwood Bellam (Bellum) and Company. Talks about the arrival of his father, a stonemason, in Auckland in 1909, work he did in the Auckland area and the advent of the firm. Describes joining the firm in 1931, going to Invercargill, returning to Auckland and shifting to Wellington in 1937. Discusses emoleum (emulsified bitumen), and its use on roads. Mentions the firm's work in Taranaki and the role of Russell Matthews, who built Tupare.

Describes forming his own firm Bell-Wood (Bel-wood) Bitumen which operated in Wellington until the 1990s.
