Lois Ngaire McKain born Frankton 1926. Outlines family background - father, John Alexander Clarke, bought land from Ewen McGregor estate after World War I. Relates early recollections of farmland, with Jersey cows and talks about major changes in dairying, mechanisation and hygiene. Describes childhood home built by father and domestic facilities and routine. Talks about clearing of land and refers to Dalmations who did much of drainage work. Other farm related topics covered include: rabbits and opossums; farm machinery; Veterinary services; Federated Farmers and Farm Cadet Scheme.
Describes school at Ngahinepouri; mode of transport to school, playground facilities, exams, school reports, parent involvement, visits by inspectors and dental care. Recalls World War II - military training for boys; Home guard at Ngahinepouri; community farewells; Patriotic fund raising and food parcels; effect of military presence at Rukuhia; news of casualities; rationing, with reference to glory box, trousseau and petrol coupons as wedding gifts. Discusses recreation, church activities and transport.
