Florence Eileen Cotton (nee Freeman) born Opoho, Dunedin, 1908. Gives some family background. Recalls first day at Green Island School (1913) and transfer to Concord School (1914), with reference to headmaster, Mr Bill Strong and Misses McIntyre, Ford and McGregor. Describes in detail route to school from home; slates and slate pencils at Green Island school and secondary education at King Edward Technical College, with reference to Angus Marshall, rector of the College. Refers to visit of the Prince and Lord Mountbatten to Green Island School and ballot to present the Prince's bouquet won by Heather Kenyon. Other recollections include: Influenza epidemic (1918), referring to two victims, Violet and Dave McLean who ran the bakery; Saturday morning chores; meal times; attendance at the old Bretheren Gospel Hall; The great Depression; South Seas Exhibition 1925-1926; early dental care, with reference to Wheeler & Ballard; medical service - perscriptions and how they were obtained; Miller Park and Labour Hall (moved after Abbotsford slip). Talks about the ethnic composition of Green Island in those days and the Industrial School. Talks about own family's involvement in Green Island Lodge, Court Pride and Court Queen. Recalls Green Island School Fife & Drum Band; Green Island Brass Band and Green Island Young Ladies Club.
