Description

Montague Harry Holcroft born 1902. Talks about his experiences of the New Zealand Bush in his youth and his father's love for the bush. Recalls leaving school aged 15 and being unable to go to university due to parents' circumstances. Reference to headmaster, Mr Burton Brown. Describes experiences overseas and the hardships suffered in London. Returned from London in 1930 and talks about his six years of Freelance writing during the depression, before getting a job with Southland Times, writing a daily column on Social History. Talks about his time as editor of the Listener, with reference to editorials against Capital Punishment. Mentions Ralph Hannan. Gives his opinion on Welfare State. Mentions Maori problems. Considers, that of the three books he had published, `Brazilian Daughter' was his favourite.
