Context: On December 15, 2011, the United States formally ended its mission in Iraq. On December 18, 2011, the United States completed its withdrawal from Iraq. Obama announced an initial drawdown from Afghanistan of 10,000 troops in two phases with 5,000 troops coming home this summer (2011) and 5,000 more by the end of the year. An additional 20,000-plus are to follow by September 2012.
