Unidentified students, during capping procession in Wellington, wearing white costumes, including a truck with a sign reading 'They Need You, Verwoerd Craven'
- 6 May 1960
Photograph taken for the Evening Post newspaper of Wellington by an unidentified staff photographer.
- The students are taking part in a capping parade, and are dressed in white sheets with pointed 'hats' resembling Ku Klux Klan costumes. The sign on the front of the truck reads 'They need you Verwoerd Craven' with the silhouettes of two men. These figures represent the South African Prime Minister of the day, Hendrik Verwoerd and the President of the South African Rugby Board at that time, Danie Craven.
In May 1960 the All Blacks were due to leave for a tour of South Africa. The tour is best remembered for the fact that no players of Maori descent were selected, due to South Africa's apartheid policies. Despite some of the largest public protests in New Zealand's history, the Government did not intervene and the tour to South Africa went ahead.
