Description

Postcard folded in three shows a photograph of a carved Maori canoe seating 100 warriors. The postmark is for August 1909, but the imprint suggests a 1903 date.

One panel of the card shows a handwritten letter from "Charles" on board the SS 'Shirala' in Auckland, to Miss J Penny of Clapton, London. The letter reads: "Dear June, Many thanks for your letter of 24th Nov. I'm very sorry to hear that Jess has been on the sick list again. Seasonable colds are not to my liking. I hope Jess ere this has shaken hers off. My trip to New Zealand has been a very pleasant one indeed & I feel all the better for a spell of cold weather. We leave here today for Newcastle, & I hope to get my letter there, I hear Bert has left for the Cape & he tells me he has had a very pleasant holiday but fellt a bit lonely at times. Well dear June, you must excuse this short note as I am kept fairly busy. My love to you and all at home & with every best wish, you affec. brother Charles".
