Mount Cook School (Wellington) : Records

The records comprise the three sets of registers for the Infants, Boys, and Girls schools. The Boys' and Girls' registers run from 1881 to 1926, while the Infants' registers cover 1882-1935. The `Main' registers run from 1926- 1978. The Boys' registers between 1905-1915 are missing. There are also daily attendance books from 1940s-1950s, a minute book of the Parent Teacher Association, and various papers relating to school administration 1960-1970s.

Boys and Girls admission registers from 1878 to 1881 are held at the Beaglehole Room, Victoria University Library, as are log books, correspondence records and other administrative papers; an inventory is available

Relationship complexity - Another 30 volumes of records for the school, including minute books, registers and log books, covering 1874-1936 are held by the Beaglehole Room, Victoria University of Wellington Library (Ref: MSS S372 M9). Three pupil registers are included - Boys School 1877-1878, 1879-1880, and Girls School 1875 to Jan 1882.

The School Committee donated the earlier registers and the bulk of the administration records to the Victoria University Library in 1978.

Mount Cook School is situated on Buckle and Tory Streets in Wellington. It opened in 1875 with an Infant School, a Boys' School and a Girls' School, each with their own buildings. In 1926, the `brick school' was opened and the Boys' and the Girls' schools were united into one `main school', with the Infant School following in 1935.
