Description

Photograph of the front page of the periodical 'New Zealand Free Lance' dated 9 October, 1940, featuring a cartoon by Ken Alexander titled "When mother joins the Women's Auxiliary". Shows the mast-head of the Free Lance at the top with the cartoon beneath. Cartoon depicts the effects of women joining the Women's War Services Auxiliary, during World War 2. Shows a suburban backyard where a stressed and sweating father hangs out washing surrounded by the trappings of domestic life. Smoke pours from the kitchen. A young child pulls the tail of a cat and an infant cries in its pram. A Scottish terrier pulls wet washing out of the laundry basket. The man's wife, dressed in the uniform of the Women's War Services Auxiliary, calls to him "No talking in the ranks, John!" and he is thinking "Have I joined the Home Guard? Have I - joined - !!*!!?!". A male neighbour watches the spectacle from over a fence. Photograph taken for the Library between 1991-1993 by an unidentified photographer.
