Description

Officers from H. M. S. Pandora on a digging picnic in the Coromandel, variously occupied in splitting a rock. finding gold, digging for gold, transporting a long tom gold sluice and a cradle, climbing a tree, and botanising.

Inscriptions: Recto - Cartoons on great National Subjects no. 2. Ye Wynyard his diggings. [overall titles]; Ye medical officer falls in with a nuggett [written below a drawing of Dr John Jolliffe, who has tripped over a large gold nugget and fallen as he carries one end of a Long tom]; Nuggett [a gold nugget]; Ye long Tom; Ye Gold Commissioner [i.e Charles Heaphy, bent under the weight of the Long Tom]; Ye boy Jones [i.e. Theodore Morton Jones, the writer, also bent under the weight of the Long Tom, at its front]; Prospecting [of an officer who has climbed a tree and is gazing down into a stream from the tree]; Digging for gold; Finding gold [all inscriptions across the centre of the image]; Ye naturalist's research; specimen box [of an officer on hands and knees in the left foreground inspecting the flora]; Present use of ye cradle. Ye thoughtful reflecteth on ye future [an officer lying on his back smoking a pipe in the wooden gold cradle]; Ye Long Tom. Bob beggeth. [of a very tall Marine in the centre right foreground, smoking a pipe with the dog begging on his right]; Supposed to contain a nuggett [of an officer leaping above a large rock with a pick in the far right foreground]
