Carte de visite portrait of a Maori woman from the Hawkes Bay district, wearing a korowai (tag cloak), taken, probably in the 1870s, by Samuel Carnell of Napier. Possibly a wife of Te Kooti.

Dated from Carnell's use of the wet collodion process early in his career.

A carte de visite print from this negative is contained in an album formerly belonging to Jasper Lucas Herrick (1833-1890). On the album page the image is identified as Hene Whatanga, while on the back of the carte is inscribed Hene Whatangi (or Wharangi).

Inscriptions: Marginal notes on negative - top centre - One of Te Kutes [indecipherable]; Marginal notes on negative - centre left - [indecipherable]
